Loafers for men made of hand buffed leather | Zegna
When Zegna ventured into shoemaking it worked with the experts. It built its own factory. It brought its own decades of expertise in fabric making and leather. It combined the best of the old with the best of the new. This is how Zegna makes shoes today.

rmenegildo Zegna has become a shoemaker. And like all craftsmen involved in shoemaking, Zegna is obsessed with the constant pursuit of what creates the ideal shoe. When it comes to examining how Zegna makes that perfect product, we can look at Mocassino – the foundation of the modern man's shoe collection.

Mocassino: Each shoe has its own unique patina

The ideal shoe is stitched, not glued. Zegna has learnt, over time, that a stitched construction is preferable to a glued construction. Mocassinos are made in the traditional ‘sacchetto’ construction. The Italian word for ‘little bag’, this technique involves stitching the lining and insole, one-by-one onto the upper. The Sacchetto method means discreet stitching, fewer seams and greater comfort.

The ideal shoe takes on the shape of its wearer. Zegna makes the inner-soles of its mocassino with natural cork for more breathability and a softer step. And combined with the sachetto construction, this helps create a shoe that over time moulds to the unique shape of the wearer’s foot.

The ideal shoe is unique, like its wearer. We think that beauty lies in differences. The Zegna Mocassino comes in several different styles, some more formal than the other. The colour palette varies too, with shoes available in black, rich browns and burgundies.

MOCASSINO: THE HAND POLISHING PROCESS

What makes each mocasino unique is the Zegna hand polishing process. Leather is a living material. It varies in depth of colour as does a barrel of olives. It just needs special care – and an experienced hand - to bring out its richness.

The ideal shoe is loved, by its maker and by its wearer. That’s why, before it leaves the factory in Parma in Italy, we take time to hand polish each one.

The ideal shoe needs time. Using a special leather cloth, wrapped round the two fingers of a hand, each shoe is hand-polished for 45 minutes. The polishing brings out the depth and warmth of the leather.

This attention to detail nourishes the leather and gives each shoe its own unique shade and rich patina. This is a patina that will develop over time as the shoe is worn, loved – and polished – by its wearer.
